Little Britain goes silver

by Antonia Faust 12 Dec 2011 20:36 GMT 6-9 September 2012

The 2012 Little Britain Challenge Cup www.littlebritain.co.uk, running from Thursday 6 until Sunday 9 September, will be celebrating its 25th Silver Anniversary. Taking place in Cowes on the Isle of Wight, the construction industry's action-packed three day sailing regatta will be attracting a large cross section of organisations and individuals who are involved in the building world.

It was back in 1988, that keen sailor and architect Peter Thompson along with co-consultants Steve Green and Phil Davis created the first Little Britain Challenge; so named, as at the time, they were all consultants for the Little Britain Office Development on London Wall. The three men with respective crews completed a single race in the Solent, with the winners' prize being the price of dinner.

Tony Poole of Sheppard Robson, 2012 LBCC Chairman comments, "Since such modest beginnings, the Little Britain, despite several recessions, has grown into the major sporting event for our industry. Added to which, due to the generosity of our supporters, the regatta has generated to date a substantial £1.25m for some deserving charities."

Today over 100 boats compete in the Solent and, with racing organised by the Royal Yacht Squadron, makes this the ultimate networking and team building event. After racing each day, the crews, their guests and spectators are entertained with pontoon parties, dinner and live entertainment, which runs through until the early hours.

Entrants can choose between 1, 2 and 3 day packages, to ensure that the maximum number of sailors have the opportunity to compete and join in the celebrations in this historic year.

The weekend will build to a climax with the glamorous, star-hosted Saturday Black Tie Ball, where winners are announced, and step up to take home a cherished Silver Anniversary LBCC trophy.

Little Britain SB3 Challenge Take Two

Introduced in 2011, the Little Britain SB3 Laser Challenge www.littlebritainsb3.co.uk which received a great reception for its inaugural event, has been encouraged to return on Friday 15 and Saturday 16 June in Cowes, Isle of Wight.

This LBCC sports boat regatta, which can accommodate crews of up to 4, will be run in conjunction with Pelican Racing, and is ideal for both experienced and debutante sailors. Optional boat charter, picnic lunch and informal evening barbeque supper will be part of the package.

Charity Pay Day

The LBCC, who despite the knock on effect of the ongoing recession, has managed to raise in the region of £40, 000 for charity during the 2011 regatta. A cheque presentation to the event's designated charities will be taking place in January at a London reception generously hosted by Domus. Representatives from all the charities will be attending, including the Skandia Team GBR Paralympic Sailing Team in this, their year of years, Ellen McArthur Cancer Trust, the Jubilee and Cirdan Sailing Trusts, and Cowes Sea Cadets.
