17-19 May 2012
The historic Riva Cup took place from the 17th-19th May and was certainly lucky with the weather. Almost 100 boats participated divided into Dyas, Korsar and 505 (the largest class with 50 boats), from Germany, Austria, Denmark, Great Britain, Switzerland, France, Belgium and Italy. The maximum number of races were accomplished with the final of the 8 being raced with winds of 12/18 knots. The Riva Cup is just one of the events organised by Fraglia Vela Riva where sailing enthusiasts can combine the sport of sailing with a 4 day holiday in lovely Riva del Garda.
The participants in The Riva Cup are made up of adults with experience in racing and those, who although have never been champions, enjoy the challenge of racing in the often strong, southerly winds so characteristic of Trentino Garda.
The Italians had only 3 crews in the 505 class (akin to the 470 but with a much larger sail). This class was won by Hunger and Kleiner of Germany by 9 points over Bojsen-Moller of Denmark. Third place went to Kellner-Schoeler of Germany, who after the partial results of 10-16-4-2-9, finished off with an impressive 3rd and two 1sts!
The largest class, the Dyas, was won by Baenninger-Helbing of Switzerland who showed consistent form throughout (2-6-1-1-1-2-2-3). The German crew of Guenter-Bender were second.
The Korsar class, with more than twenty boats taking part, was won by Obermann-Linermann of Germany with 5 partial victories. Four points behind and in second place were fellow Germans Troetschel-Seilbert. Mancke-Blum were third.
The next racing date on Fraglia Vela Riva's calendar is for Saturday, 27th May with the Fraglia Cup, followed by Intevela 2012 from 6th-10th June for young sailors.
