Haven Series Races 9 & 10

by Neale Fuller 25 Sep 2012 07:07 BST 22-23 September 2012

Perfect conditions greeted the twenty two yachts on Saturday morning, it was a steady southerly breeze. The officer of the day set a suitable long course with a run start to Armada buoy.

Des Cowan in Eclipse was first round with the rest of the fleet close behind and bunched together. After a windward leg to Outer Ridge Eclipse was still leading with White Lightning close behind. Next was a tight reach to Cork Ledge against the tide, some yachts flew spinnakers. Fatjax was now leading class one, in pursuit of the leading class two boats on the long leg to Medusa.

The wind was now decreasing allowing these three yachts to open up a gap on the rest of the fleet. White Lightning was first round Medusa, closely followed by Fatjax and Eclipse. Next was a slow leg against the tide to Stone Banks, boats were pointing thirty or forty degrees from each other and anchors were being prepared. After a slow beat to Fox's buoy the OOD decided to shorten the course.

The Melges kept further out to sea than the leading boats and managed to find more breeze to cross the line first, followed by Fatjax and White Lightning. With the breeze building the rest of the fleet soon finished and headed for home. Simon Garners Trapper Ts 250 won the race on handicap.

Eighteen boats braved windy conditions on Sunday. After an eventful starting sequence class two got underway with a windward leg to Fox's buoy. Rainbow led, closely followed by Silver Gull, Artic Monkey and Eclipse. They all rounded the mark within a few boats legs of one another. Then it was a short spinnaker leg to Outer Ridge followed by another windward leg to Cork Ledge. A battle was emerging between Arctic Monkey and Eclipse. Rainbow was still hanging on to the lead on the downwind leg to Penny hole. Following close behind were the Leggets in Arctic Monkey, with Des Cowan in Eclipse hot on their heels. Kevin Moll's J97 Ickle Dura liked the conditions and came through the class one boats led by Suds and Four Broke.

Finally on the last short beat to Stone banks Eclipse managed to round just in front of Arctic Monkey, Rainbow and Eclipse who were flying their spinnakers nearly to the finish kept ahead of Arctic Monkey.
