Six boats came to the start line for the RORC Myth of Malham Race to St Helier, the second event in the Prima One Design offshore series. Gusts of up to 30 knots did not stop half the fleet hoisting spinnakers, but all came down well before the No Man’s Land Fort when mainsails were reefed and smaller jibs hoisted in preparation for a long beat to the Channel Islands. Mostly Harmless led the contingent favouring starboard tack at Bembridge Ledge, before tacking onto port twenty miles south only to find White Knuckles crossing ahead as she stood out from St Catherines before taking a further hitch to the west.
Reefs were shaken out just before dark as the wind started to drop. Serendip passed White Knuckles as she changed head sails at first light only to be passed as White Knuckles hoisted her kite earlier prior to rounding Les Hanois. On the downwind leg to Jersey, Serendip gybed first and was able to hold her kite much longer with the wind continuing to veer. But sailing along the south coast of Jersey White Knuckles was slightly further out and managed to sail through to leeward, maintaining her lead over the last few miles to both to take 3rd place in IRC1 and win the one design event by less than five minutes.
Overall Results:
