RYA Yorkshire & Humberside Masters at Grimwith Sailing Club

by Keith Escritt 24 Sep 2002 15:42 BST

26 Boats from 10 clubs started race one in light conditions giving roll tackers an advantage! Early leaders were Jonathan/Jane Lister (Craven) in an RS200, and Peter Slingsby/Charlotte Barricks' National 12 (Yeadon). The fast boats got through eventually notably Richard/David Paynters' Laser4000, but they were shadowed by Grimwith clubmates Mike/Anne Sauls' RS200 who won from Paul Preistley/Chris Rainfords' Scorpion (Scammonden) and Rob Pattersons’ Phantom (Ripon).

Race two's stronger breeze allowed the Grimwith Vortex of Trevor Jefferson and Phil Whitehead to get away. As the wind faded, Jefferson won from Whitehead. Saul beat Preistley after a long battle with him, Martin Smith /Barbara Howarth (East Lancs) and Martin Barratt (Craven) in his Vareo.

Starting race 3, the 4000 of Steve Rickwood/Keith Escritt was with the Vortex who couldn't get the clear wind they needed. Preistley and Saul were close behind, and being virtually the same handicap meant that with the Vortex's struggling, the winner between these two on the water would probably win overall. Saul was fastest upwind, Preistley fastest downwind. It was literally feet from the line that Saul pipped Preistley winning the race and event. Preistley was second overall with Jefferson third and Whitehead fourth. Rob Patterson was a notable fifth, Smith/Howarth sixth, Barrett 7th with Lister and Trevor Goods RS200s following. Rickwood/Escritt, first trapeze boat, were tenth. First Grand Masters were Eric Stringer/Bob Fenn (Craven) in an Albacore.

Prizes were presented by RYA regional organiser Richard Benson who asked Grimwith to host the event again next year, so we're doing something right!
