Grimwith Grapple at Grimwith Sailing Club

by Ian Escritt 13 Jun 2003 09:00 BST

8th June 03

18 boats were greeted by a light sw breeze and it looked like the event was to be an asymmetric benefit. The first race started in a force 1 to 2 with Peter Crags and Ronny Carter in their RS800 leading the fleet round, but it was to be the RS400 of Richard Marsh and Mark Jackson who took the race on handicap from Ian Escritt(vortex) then Keith Escritt (RS200). During the interval the Grimwith microsystem kicked in for the day at a chilly force 5 to 6. There was some carnage during the race which resulted in many sailors helping each other out. Ian took the race from Phil Whitehead and Richard/Mark 3rd.

Going into the last race four people were still in contention but in an ever increasing breeze it was a Vortex benefit taking the first 4 places ahead of Keith(rs200). This Gave Ian the win with Richard/Mark in second and Phil 3rd. There were notable performances from Tony Wild in his laser who was never out of the top 10 against the trapeeze boats and Mike Pullin in his rs600 who managed not to capsize in some pretty wild conditions.
