Prima 38 Silva Cup at the Island Sailing Club

by Tom Hayhoe 25 Sep 2003 08:01 BST 20th - 21st September

Sparkling late summer weather and 8 - 10 knots welcomed nine Prima 38 One Designs for the three windward leeward race on the first day of the Silva Cup, hosted by the Island Sailing Club over the weekend 20th/21st September. The first two races were both won by Jon Perry's Firestorm from Closing Time with co-owner David Riley at the helm, before the Army Sailing Association's Longbow broke the run of form by taking race 3 from Guy Spurr's Kylidh.

Sunday brought less wind and cloud cover that often promised to break but never quite managed to clear. Firestorm was back on top in race 4, the last of the windward-leewards, but there was a change in the ranks behind, with Paul King's Serendip taking second from Roger Lee's Fat Diva.

Race 5 should have been a Solent round the cans treasure hunt counting for double points, but the fading breeze meant that the course was shortened, somewhat controversially in view of ambiguity in the course description, as boats crossed the Island Sailing Club line after only three turning marks. Rodney Emberson's Bounty Hunter was the early pace setter, but running aground off Egypt Point was not fast and meant that Firestorm was able to break through to take first.

With one event left in the Prima 38 Inshore Series, Firestorm leads from Longbow and Mostly Harmless.
