YachtsandYachting.com and the #GetOutAndSail partners are delighted to announce the second recipient of #GetOutAndSail support – Paignton Sailing Club's Paignton Open 4 Single Handed Dinghies (POSH) Regatta.
The POSH Regatta takes place on 11-12 May and attracted 68 single-handers racing in three fleets for the inaugural event in 2012. With the #GetOutAndSail support it is hoped that this figure can be surpassed in 2013.
Nick Ripley, Rear Commodore (sailing) at Paignton Sailing Club said on hearing the news, "Paignton Sailing Club has a very small membership but has a reputation for holding large championships. We were looking for an event that the membership could take part in, which is how POSH (and PODD) came about. The first POSH was held last year and attracted 68 entrants which was when we realised that we were onto something. The #GetOutAndSail award will be a fantastic boost to the club and hopefully will point the way to other clubs holding similar events."
Mark Jardine of YachtsandYachting.com commented, "The Paignton Open 4 Single Handed Dinghies seems like another great event to receive #GetOutAndSail support. An inclusive event which gathers sailors from a number of classes together. It would be great to see the event top 100 entries!"
The event came about when the club realised there didn't seem to be an event just for single handed dinghies. So it was decided that the Spring Regatta would have a makeover and become a single handed dinghy event. Classes that took to the inaugural event in numbers were the RS600s, Contenders, Blazes, Phantoms, RS100s, RS Vareos and D Ones. Entry is capped to 120 boats so register your interest by emailing
It is possible to launch at any tide state into the sheltered yet challenging waters of Torbay. There is easy access to the club with free parking within a few minutes walk. Paignton Sailing Club are renowned for hosting several large regattas including Laser World Qualifiers, Topper events and RS100 & Scorpion nationals to name but a few.
Keep your nominations coming in
While we've had a good number of nominations for #GetOutAndSail, some months have far more than others. Surprisingly, June and July still have the lowest number of nominations while September has the highest. Get together at your club and work out which event would benefit most from the support and start nominating - www.YachtsandYachting.com/GetOutAndSail!
We've had some great feedback on how to keep costs down when travelling to events, so please keep sharing your ideas too.
A huge thank-you to our ten #GetOutAndSail partners; Crewsaver, Gul, Harken, International Paint, Navigators & General, Noble Marine, Ovington Boats, Rooster Sailing, Seldén Masts and Wildwind. Without them this initiative simply wouldn't be possible. It is their belief in #GetOutAndSail which will drive it forward and hopefully get more people out on the water.
