Prima 38s at Skandia Life Cowes Week

by Sam Badrick 15 Aug 2001 14:23 BST

With many of the Prima's taking part in the Rolex Fastnet this year there were only 6 boats competing among 52 other yachts in IRC 2. Saturdays race saw the closest finish of the regatta with Fat Diva, Roger Lee finishing 43 seconds ahead of Firestorm, Jonathon Perry with White Knuckles II, Simon Brown 1 minute behind, finishing 5th, 6th & 7th in class.

With the wind strength increasing on Sunday we saw a similar close finish with Born Slippy II in her last race during the week, 55 second ahead of White Knuckles II. Monday saw Firestorm get a 3rd in class due to the retirement of White Knuckles II whilst leading the entire class. It was shaping up to be a 3-way fight for Prima honours between White Knuckles II, Firestorm and Fat Diva with 1 win each.

The next 3 races saw again the wins shared equally, with White Knuckles II being the more consistent by coming second in 2 races. Fridays race started in much lighter winds and it was Firestorm who got away at the start and was able to follow the wind band down the Solent until the sea breeze came in later in the day. After falling behind White Knuckles II, with some good tactical calls, sailed back through the fleet but was not able to catch Firestorm.

The last race went to Fat Diva but with the 2-race discard the winner was White Knuckles II Simon Brown from Dublin in his first Skandia Life Cowes Week.
