Fourth race wins for Symphony & Solace
Last Wednesday’s fourth race in the Southampton Water Sailing Association’s evening series saw 8 boats representing 3 clubs come to the start line. Conditions were again favourable with a consistent Force 4 North Westerly breeze.
Two distinct duals soon developed. At the front, Jonathan Tickner’s yellow Limbo Calypso paced Alex Bell and Paul Bush’s Beneteau 305 Symphony. Calypso made good use of her spinnaker and despite a slower handicap, stayed in contention throughout. Symphony took line honours but Calypso held on to finish less than a minute behind.
Mid fleet, Petite Folie, Vaughan Tudor Williams’ Trapper 501 shadowed Hawkwind, the Tomahawk of Malcolm Kirk, eventually overhauling and finishing exactly 1 minute ahead.
Sailing their own races Chris Jackman’s Westerly Jouster 21, Stephen Booy’s Hunter 31 Arty Miss and Kelvin Gibson’s Westerly Pageant Cindar opted for clean air and benefited accordingly.
Appearing for the first time was Southampton Sailing Club’s under 21 youth entry, the T24 Hasty, helmed by David Haysom. Hasty made hesitant progress on the first beat but then hastened on the downwind legs to stay in contention.
