Mid-summer win for Netley
Coinciding with the high water stand and with a steady breeze and mid-summer sunshine, conditions for the start of the 5th race of the Southampton Water Sailing Association dinghy evening series were idyllic. All boats got off to a clean start and headed North towards the 1st mark at the mouth of the Itchen river before heading downwind with Spinnakers set towards Southampton Sailing Club.
A reach along Weston shore and then upwind toward the yellow spherical Jib buoy saw boats complete their first lap. Making a welcome appearance in her Laser Radial, Liz Harris of Netley Sailing Club sailed above her handicap throughout.
With dying wind and a shortened course, the International 470 of William Waddington took line honours. However, Liz finished just over a minute behind and corrected time saw her take overall victory.
Sailing their best race so-far, the Warwicks, a father and daughter crew from Southampton Sailing Club in a Comet Duo pulled out all the stops to snatch second place from the third placed Bosun of the Southampton University Staff Sailing Club.
The SWSA dinghy evening Series continues on Wednesday 7th July. For more information, please see www.swsa.org.uk
