With a fresh and gusty North Westerly wind competitors in the 4th race of the Southampton Water Sailing Association dinghy evening series found the conditions challenging. Keith Warwick of Southampton Sailing Club sailing a Comet duo was unlucky enough to capsize in the pre-start manouveres. In for the “early bath” this father and daughter team subsequently retired.
Weathering the gusts the teenagers William Waddington and Phil Smith sailing an International 470 led from the start. However on the final leg the pair paid heavily for a lapse of concentration and with the top of their mast impaled in the Weston mud, they watched as the Wayfarer helmed by Francesco Vuolo of the Unversity staff sailing club swept to line honours and first place on corrected time. New to the boat having recently sold his Laser Stratos, the result must have been particularly pleasing for Francesco.
From the same club Costantino Corbari and Bram Sengers sailing an RS vision had a race of mixed fortune. Twice capsized but quick to recover they endured the conditions to secure second place. Enjoying close racing the International 420’s helmed by Anne Chabert of the University and Mike Greig of Southampton Sailing Club both stayed right side up throughout. However a late gear failure saw Mike heading for harbour and the University ladies team delighted to secure 4th place.
The SWSA dinghy evening Series continues on Tuesday 22nd June. For more information, please see www.swsa.org.uk
