Braving grey and drizzly conditions, 9 competitors from 4 clubs assembled off Netley foreshore for the 4th race in the Southampton Water Sailing Association’s cruiser evening series.
Starting to the South, boats beat along the Netley shore, heading to the upwind mark adjacent to Hamble refinery. Rounding first, Matt Girling of Fawley Power Station Sailing Club opted to Spinnaker and led the fleet downwind along the edge of the shipping channel. In hot pursuit, Alex Bell and Paul Bush of Warsash Sailing Club chased hard but with neither boat making any significant mistakes, opportunities for overtaking were limited.
Onto the final leg Girling dropped his spinnaker and reached across Southampton Water to cross the finish line 2 minutes ahead of Bell and Bush. Taking class 1 third place was Costantino Corbari of Southampton Sailing Club in the well known green mini-tonner Glass Onion.
In class 2, Graham Harrison’s Trapper 500 Auriole had another good race, not only taking 1st place but also finishing ahead of three class 1 boats on un-corrected time. Second was Andy Valentine of Southampton Sailing Club in his Achilles 9 metre.
The SWSA cruiser evening Series continues on Monday 21st June. For more information, please see www.swsa.org.uk
