Top of the class for university
With long summer days on the wane the Southampton Water Sailing Association’s dinghy evening series recently drew to a close. Hosted for the 2nd year by Southampton Sailing Club this 10 race series saw 19 boats from 4 clubs competing in mono and multihull classes.
Finishing no lower than 2nd in each race, Liz Harris of Netley Sailing Club was unlucky not to finish higher in the series. Liz showed great commitment, always sailing 2 miles to and from the race area in her Laser Radial. However with 6 races to count and having only completed 5, Liz picked up penalty points that saw her finish 4th overall. Faring better were the father and son team of Peter and Alex Lowry.
Competing together for their first season, their Mirror Miracle proudly outshone many more exotic machines to finish 3rd. Runners up were the teenage team of William Waddington and Phil Smith. Winchester Students of Kings School and Sparsholt college respectively they successfully graduated this season to an International 470, previously both sailing GP14’s.
Top of the class for 2010 though were the staff team of Bram Sengers and Costantino Corbari from Southampton University sailing an RS Vision Asymmetric. Competing in all 10 races and scoring 3 first places they proved unassailable.
SWSA events are open to competitors from the 17 member clubs or individual RYA members. For more information, please see www.swsa.org.uk
