Fawley generates two more wins
With a moderate breeze and warm sunshine, sun glasses and shorts were much in evidence for the start of the 3rd race of Southampton Water Sailing Association’s cruiser evening series.
Both aiming for the committee boat end of the line and with barely a wellie’s width between them Zipper and Close Encounter of Fawley Power Station SC and Southampton SC respectively luffed hard to clear the committee boat at the gun. Beating down Southampton water toward the windward mark Zipper opened up a lead and rounded first. Under spinnaker to the downwind mark 1st and 2nd places looked assured but Close Encounter’s spinnaker drop took a turn for the worse and the ensuing spaghetti of cordage let the mini tonner Glass Onion through. Upwind on the 2nd lap Zipper stretched her lead and Glass Onion held onto 2nd place. Downwind to the finish, decreasing wind saw Zipper take line honours and class 1 podium with Glass Onion 2nd and Close Encounter 3rd.
In class 2, the Trapper 500 Auriole, also from Fawley Power Station SC held off the Dufour 1800 Bianca from Southampton SC to secure first place. All-in-all another excellent evening for Fawley, having now won the first 3 races in both class 1 and 2 of this interclub series.
The SWSA cruiser evening Series continues on Monday 7th June. For more information, please see www.swsa.org.uk
